Introduction

The Entrepreneurship for Rural Tourism Growth series brings together interdisciplinary research and practical insights to show how innovative entrepreneurial approaches can stimulate rural economies while preserving cultural heritage and environmental resources.

Bridging theory and practice, the series covers a wide range of themes, including community-based tourism, agritourism, social entrepreneurship, and sustainable practices such as waste management and gastronomy tourism. It also explores emerging dimensions like digital transformation, advanced technologies (GIS, AR/VR), and the integration of renewable energy and resource-efficient models.

Featuring comparative case studies and evidence-based research from India, China, Malaysia, Nigeria, and beyond, the series offers a global perspective on international best practices and localised solutions. Foreword

Rural tourism is a crucial accelerator to sustainable development, cultural conservation, and economic well-being across global communities. In the midst of the complex environment of globalization and urbanization, rural areas face the challenge of entrepreneurship as a key initiative that can enable tourism to transform the region and ensure that local communities have the motivation to share equitably in the growing industry.

Through the unique compilation of two volumes titled Entrepreneurship for Rural Tourism Growth: New Perspectives and Future Directions, this book brings together prominent scholars, practitioners, and researchers to investigate the complex nature of the association between entrepreneurship and the development of rural tourism. The eleven chapters of Volume I lay the groundwork for the principles and theory of indigenous entrepreneurship, community-based tourism models, and sustainable practices as the cornerstone of a successful rural tourism venture.

Volume I covers important underlying issues such as indigenous entrepreneurship and community-based tourism development, sustainable waste management, customer preferences in agritourism, gastronomy and sustainable development, and the evaluation of technical efficiency in rural tourism enterprises. The chapters present strong case studies and research findings that shed light on how sustainable development in rural areas can be achieved across various geographical and cultural settings.

In combination with Volume II, this full package can equip policymakers, businesspeople, academics, and community leaders with evidence-based information and practical solutions to establish a healthy, inclusive, and sustainable rural tourism ecosystem. The studies and ideas undertaken in this context can be considered necessary assets for supporting the further development of entrepreneurial excellence in rural areas and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are broadly distributed, without sacrificing the environment and cultural integrity.

We are wholeheartedly grateful to our cooperating authors whose skills and effort enabled us to realize this two-volume version. Their academic rigor, field experience, and dedication to excellence in rural development have become an indispensable asset to the world of rural tourism.
