Introduction

Nitrogen containing compounds produced by industrial processes are pollutants which pose a significant environmental and health hazard. There are a number of processes that have been devised for removing nitrogen compounds from wastewater. This reference book summarizes different denitrification methods for wastewater processing. The book introduces readers to toxic nitrogen compounds responsible for water pollution. This introduction is followed by chapters which explain different nitrogen removal methods including conventional methods, biological methods, food industry wastewater treatment and new approaches towards environmental pollution remediation: Bio Electrochemical Systems (BESs). This book is a handy reference guide for industrial and environmental engineers and students learning about wastewater management and industrial denitrification.

Foreword

Since the ecological and environmental monitoring and protection has been widely addressed and emphasized by academic research and public, the remediation and removal for the pollutants became a critical subject for the Industry, Official and Academy. The state-of-the art technology needs to be comprehensively surveyed covering a wide spectrum of related areas. This book is aimed to fulfill this goal and hopefully will benefit the student, teaching staff, engineers, staffs in the civil corporation and also the public.

This book is divided into 5 chapters and an introduction. In the introduction section, Nitrogen compounds and their toxicity and pollution in the water environment are first addressed and the necessity to remove them from the water body is emphasized. Chapter 1 discusses conventional method and technology of Nitrogen removal from water. Chapter 2 covers conventional Biological method for nitrogen removal. The next three chapters are the essence of this book and maybe the most interesting parts for the readers, in Chapter 3 the authors introduce food industry wastewater treatment from nitrogen compounds. In Chapters 4 and 5 a new approach towards environmental pollution remediation biotechnology by different types of Bio Electrochemical Systems (BES) is presented. The authors exert our effort to make this book as an important reference and manual guide for the readers interested in the field.
